Alfred Robert Knight

Woolwich Arsenal

Alfred had become a qualified steam-boiler engineer while in Burma in 1913 and presumably joined a ship because it is known that he was torpedoed during the First World War and spent time in the Dreadnought Hospital in Greenwich. He then took a job in Woolwich Arsenal at the end of 1915. The following are the only documents that survive from that period.

Work colleagues This photograph is of Alfred (centre) with some of his workmates at Woolwich Arsenal. The date is unknown but maybe it was taken as he, and no doubt others, were being made redundant after the war. That would date it as January 1919.
