On 4 April 1893 William appealed to Bodmin Quarter Sessions against an earlier order by magistrates Henry Durette Foster, William Roberts Crawford Potter, Harry James Young Jamieson and George Henderson who had “adjudged him putative father of the bastard child of Emily Thomas”. He was ordered to pay costs of £10.5s.2d within seven days.
